Archbishop Sion Adamian

Primate of the Diocese of Armavir

 

Archbishop Sion Adamian (baptismal name Robert) was born on September 20, 1963 in Abadan, Iran, where he received some of his primary education. 

In 1970, his family was repatriated to Armenia and settled in the town of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin). 

From 1970 to 1980, he studied at Number 6 local School. 

In 1980, he entered Gevorkian Theological Seminary at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.   

In 1985, he was ordained to the diaconate by His Eminence Archbishop Housik Santourian.   Following his ordination, he was appointed to serve in the Secretariat of the Pontifical Administration. 

In 1986, he successfully defended his final thesis entitled “The Variables of Sarkis the Graceful”.   

In 1987, he was ordained as a celibate priest by Archbishop Nerses Pozapalian, and given the priestly name of Sion.   

From 1987 to 1988, he was assigned to serve as the Assistant to the Vicar General of the Araratian Pontifical Diocese.

From 1988 to 1999, he served as the spiritual pastor in Varna, Bulgaria.  

In 1991, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis entitled “The Bulgarian Orthodox Church” and received the rank of Archimandrite (Vardapet).   

In 1997, by the Pontifical Encyclical of the Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Karekin I, of Blessed Memory, he was granted the right and honor to wear the flowered cope.

In 1999, returning to Armenia, he again served as the Assistant to the Vicar General of the Araratian Pontifical Diocese. 

On May 22, 2000, by the order of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians; he was appointed to serve as the Locum Tenens in the Diocese of Gegharqunik. 

In 2001, continuing in his service to the Church, he was appointed to serve as the Primate of the Diocese of Armavir by the order of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians.  

On September 30, 2001, he was consecrated as a Bishop by His Holiness Karekin II, in the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin.

On February 26, 2019, on the Feast Day of St. Ghevond the Priest, Bishop Sion was elevated to the rank of Archbishop by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians.
