Bishops of Armenia Issued a Statement on the Domestic Developments in Armenia 11.06.2021

On June 10, in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, under the presidency of His Holiness Karekin II; Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians a meeting of bishops serving in Armenia, was held, during which issues related to the current situation of our public life were touched upon. At the conclusion of the meeting, the following statement was issued․

"Discussing the challenges facing our homeland and people, we express deep concern over a number of reprehensible phenomena in the domestic political life of Armenia during this extraordinary parliamentary election.

Since the first day of pre-election campaign launched on June 07, hate speech, defamatory and insulting expressions, the behavior of swearing, revenge and threatening with violence, unfortunately, can put our society in such a situation where, in case of escalation, civil clashes on the ground of intolerance, hatred and enmity should become inevitable.

There is no justification, and all the steps, that split our society and burden the pains of war, which have not been healed yet, are condemnable.

It is an indisputable truth that the evil seed can never bear good fruit, and every house divided against itself will not stand (cf. Matthew 12:25).

The future of the homeland is at stake.

It is necessary to show patriotism, zeal and perseverance in the formation of a common vision of our people around the homeland, so that everyone will consider it an honor to bow down under the yoke of fulfilling that vision.

That is the minimum price we can pay for the self-sacrifice of our martyred children of all times.

This consciousness must prevail in our country and find ways to overcome the existing problems.

Thus, we call on all political forces, including especially the ruling party, to refrain from inappropriate speech and behavior.

Our people, who have created a centuries-old rich culture and high values, do not appropriate such manifestations that degrade our national image and reputation.

Do not be sowers of evil; do not be tempted by unacceptable behavior for our Christian people.

We pray that the Lord, under the protection of His Holy Right Hand, will keep our country in peace, granting wisdom to all our people to create their future in an atmosphere of love and solidarity. ”
