Bishop Anushavan Jamkochyan

Dean of St. Gregory the Illuminator Mother Cathedral of Yerevan

Bishop Anushavan Jamkochyan (baptismal name Anrdanik) was born on November 12, 1971, in Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin), Armenia. He received his primary and secondary education at the Vahan Rshtuni School in Vagharshapat. 

From 1989 to 1994, he studies at the Gevorkian Theological Seminary at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. He successfully defended his thesis entitled "Movses Jughayetsi’s Collection of Philology".

In 1993, he was ordained to the diaconate by Archbishop Hoosik Santourian.

From 1994 to 1998, he studied at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan. Concurrently, he was an instructor of liturgical music at the Gevorkian Theological Seminary. 

In 1995, he was ordained a celibate priest in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin by His Grace Bishop Asoghik Aristakesian and given the priestly name of Anushavan. 

From 1998 to 2000, Father Anushavan continued his education in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and studied church music at the Halle Protestant College, which he attended. 

From 2000 to 2001, he entered Martin Luther University, also in Halle, where he studied German and received Language Certificate. 

In 2001, he successfully defended his thesis entitled "Komitas and the Armenian Church" and received the rank of Archimandrite (Vardapet). 

From 2001 to 2002, he studied at the Faculty of Law at Martin Luther University, where he majored in "Jurisprudence and the Rights of the Church".

From 2002 to 2004, he studied "Church Canon Law" at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn, Germany. 

In 2004, he completed his studies with the successful defense of his thesis entitled "The Basis of Rights of the Armenian Church from the 4th through 20th Centuries", and became a candidate of Doctoral Sciences. 

On August 20, 2004, by the Order of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians he was appointed to serve as the Dean of St. Gregory the Illuminator Mother Cathedral of Yerevan, continuing his teaching at the Gevorkian Theological Seminary. 

In 2005, Father Anushavan was appointed to serve as the Dean of the Theological Faculty of Yerevan State University. 

On November 19, 2006, he was consecrated as a Bishop by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, in the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin.
